Comment by Lyn A. Govette on February 6, 2014 at 8:59am: At zoning meeting the was a comment made by a board member that listening to our concerns was democracy in action. I have some trouble with that statement as I didn't feel listened to I think the people we have elected to run this city with city staff are observing a need (to get rid of what they consider an eyesore) and not considering the impact of selling to developers to do what that company perceives as profitable. I am sure the city managers feel they have engaged citizens in conversation yet the response I hear from many is "what...wait a minute..." I may be alone in this but I do not see the mill as an eyesore I see it as a possibility, it's been standing empty for years why not look at former corridor studies survey students and faculty at ETSU look at who else has expressed interest examine their plans. And why does the Chamber o Commerce have to sell at such an exorbitant price they have put nothing other then purchase price into the property that I can see .... How about recouping your cost plus say $200,00.00??? So many questions to explore what will it hurt surely other cities that have restored old properties such as the mill could give us insight, might even be willing to come and look at building and give honest appraisal. We won't know if we don't ask.
